Compassion in Action. Dignity for All.
Supporting people with disabilities to live with independence, purpose, and respect.
We ask you Lord, to bless us today. Grant us a spirit of understanding and respect for differing views. Guide our hearts and minds so that every decision we make serves the greater good of those we are called to serve.
Amen
– Cheshire Prayer written by founder Leonard Cheshire VC
our story
Where It All Began
The first Cheshire Home was established in 1948 in the United Kingdom by Leonard Cheshire VC. Today, the organisation has grown into a global network.
There are over 250 Leonard Cheshire service centres and independent partner organisations across more than 50 countries worldwide.
In South Africa, there are 16 service centres, with Cheshire Homes operating as part of this international legacy.
Merewent Cheshire Home, located in Austerville, Durban, was opened in 1994. It is one of the 16 centres nationally and one of five within the greater eThekwini region.
“We need to set our sights high, to be satisfied with nothing less than the best, and to commit ourselves totally and unreservedly to participate in the struggle to build a more liveable world.”
– Leonard Cheshire
